Mahabaleshwar, meaning ‘God of Great Power’ in Sanskrit, offers a unique blend of old-world charm, natural beauty, and modernity. Established as a health resort in 1829 AD, it was once a jail for Chinese and Malay convicts from 1834 to 1864. These prisoners introduced the cultivation of red potatoes, strawberries, and the art of weaving cane and bamboo baskets. Many of them chose to stay in Mahabaleshwar after their release. Maharaja Pratapsinha of Satara (1818 to 1839) played a pivotal role in developing Mahabaleshwar as a health resort. In 1829, Sir John Malcolm, the first governor to visit Mahabaleshwar, established it as a prominent destination. Notably, Sir Charles Malet, the first European to step on this plateau, was a resident in Pune darbar of the Peshwas in 1791.
